Earthquake jolts Myanmar-India border

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit at 1:25 a.m. local time on Sunday (1955 GMT on Saturday) at a depth of 6.5 kilometers (4 miles).

The tremor struck 43 kilometers (26 miles) southeast of Kohima, the capital of India’s northeastern state of Nagaland, and was at 25.437 degrees north latitude and 94.496 degrees east longitude.

India’s seven northeastern states — joined to the rest of the country by a narrow sliver of land — are located in an area of frequent seismic activities.

More than 100 people were killed in September last year when a powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the border of India’s northeastern state of Sikkim and Nepal, according to AFP.

The quake devastated towns and villages on both sides of the Indian and Nepal border, as well as in southern Tibet and the tiny kingdom of Bhutan.
