E. Ukraine shelling kills 1, injures 5

At least one civilian has been killed and five others injured in shelling in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk over the past day.

Local authorities announced on Wednesday that heavy shelling struck two neighborhoods in the city center.

Donetsk is controlled by pro-Russia forces who are pushing for independence from Ukraine.

Attempts by government forces to wrest control of the city have resulted in a series of military setbacks.

Sporadic clashes continue on an almost daily basis despite the signing of a ceasefire pact by the two sides in September.

The conflict has claimed thousands of lives since April and displaced more than 600,000 people.

In its latest report, the US-based Human Rights Watch accused the Ukrainian government of attacking populated areas in Donetsk with cluster bombs. There are also references to the use of such bombs by pro-Russians.

Cluster munitions are banned in most countries because of the indiscriminate way they kill people. The Convention on Cluster Munitions, which came into force in 2010, has 114 member states. Ukraine has not joined the treaty.

The United Nations said earlier this month that more than 3,600 people had been killed in fighting between Ukrainian government troops and pro-Russia forces in Ukraine’s eastern provinces over the past six months.
