Russell Hammond was last seen leaving work early last Thursday morning.

Two men charged over the murder of a man at Geelong have made a brief court appearance.

The body of Russell Hammond, 49, of Drysdale, Victoria, was found on vacant land at Corio on Friday.

He had been burned and tied up. His burnt out car was later found in a paddock.

Garreth Giles, 24, and Christopher Coulter, 18, both of Leopold, have been charged with murder, arson and theft.

They were remanded in custody after facing the Geelong Magistrates Court.

Court documents reveal Mr Hammond was strangled in his home the day before his body was found.

The documents also reveal that in police interviews, the two men have accused each other of murdering Mr Hammond.

The court heard because of his age, Coulter could be vulnerable in custody.

They will return to court in May.

Police made an appeal for information about the murder earlier this week.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steven McIntyre, of the homicide squad described Mr Hammond as a very private person.

“We don’t have a motive as to why this could possibly have happened to Russell Hammond,” he said.

“He’s not known to police. He’s got no criminal associates that we’re aware of.”

His parents yesterday tearfully addressed the media, with his mother Helen Hammond saying her son will be remembered as a decent and generous man.

“We’re here because we’re prepared to suffer this intrusion into our privacy and grief because the police have told us it might be helpful,” she said.

“It can’t bring Russell back but if there’s a violent person out there, we need to do whatever we can to help the police make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else,” she said.

Mr Hammond was last seen returning home from working a night shift early last Thursday morning.
