A drunk man who decided to go for a swim in Cockle Bay last night is lucky to be alive after being rescued by police just as he disappeared under water below the Pyrmont Bridge.
Water police searched the bay about 8.55pm after reports of a man seen struggling in the water.
“The male was seen clinging to a channel marker under the Pyrmont Bridge,” NSW Marine Area Command acting Inspector Alex Barrell said.

“Police have tried to get the guy’s attention.
“He wasn’t responding, and at that point he floated away and started sinking.”

Senior Constable Glenn Winter dived in to bring the man to the surface and pulled him on to the police boat.
“At the time he was unconscious and had breathing difficulties,” acting Inspector Barrell said.
The 32-year-old man was treated by paramedics and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he was in a stable condition this morning.
Acting Inspector Barrell said it was believed the man had been drinking.
“The information we’ve got is the person was seen swimming in Cockle Bay.
“There was a heavy smell of alcohol coming from the male.”

Acting Inspector Barrell said it is not unusual for police to have to dive into the harbour to rescue drunk people.
“It’s something that happens from time to time.
“We do get people trying to swim [but] they can’t when they’re intoxicated and at times officers do have to jump in.
“[Senior Constable Winter] has shown some brave actions in doing so last night.
“It was a fast response that contributed to the person being alive and well this morning.
“It could have possibly been a search for a deceased person very quickly.”
There are several bars surrounding Pyrmont Bridge, but police were not sure if the man had been drinking in the area.
