Police are investigating a possible drug link to the fatal shooting of a man in Sydney’s east last night.
Brook King, 43, was shot in the head inside a garage converted into a granny flat underneath a house on French Street at Maroubra just before 6:00pm (AEDT).
He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a critical condition but died this morning.
Strike Force Abjure has been formed to investigate and police say they have a number of leads.
Officers were unable to speak with Mr King before he died but they interviewed numerous witnesses last night.
Forensic specialists also spent this morning scouring the street, which is home to former New South Wales premier Bob Carr.
Police say there were no signs of forced entry to Mr King’s flat, and they have not ruled out the involvement of a number of people who were at home when the shooting took place.
Detective Inspector Paul Persanos says officers are investigating Mr King’s criminal connections, including possible drug links.
“There’s a strike force made up of homicide investigators and eastern beaches detectives and at the moment we’re more than happy with the progress we’re making in relation to a number of lines of inquiry,” Inspector Persanos said.
He has urged the community to remain calm.
“It’s not something that we are saying the public should hold fears in the area, thinking there is a gunman around. We’re saying this was a targeted incident,” he said.
