Drowned man may have been pushed: police

A man who drowned in Sydney’s Darling Harbour after a brawl could have been pushed, police say.

Several men got into an argument inside a bar in the Cockle Bay entertainment quarter about 12.45am (AEDT) on Sunday.

A brawl involving 20 men then broke out on the boardwalk outside the bar, which resulted in a 19-year-old man from Plumpton ending up in the water.

Two policewomen in the area at the time tried to break up the melee but they were both assaulted.

When they saw that the man in the water was in difficulty, one of the officers and several members of the public jumped in to try to rescue him.

A lifebuoy was also thrown towards him.

Then everyone lost sight of him a short time later and, despite the efforts of the policewoman, two of her colleagues and two members of the public, he could not be found.

Police divers were called to the scene and found the man’s body just before 3.30am (AEDT).

Assistant commissioner Mark Murdoch said the death was being treated as suspicious.

It was too early to tell if he was unconscious when he fell into the water, Mr Murdoch said.

Three men – a 22-year-old from Berala, 23-year-old from Macquarie Fields and 24-year-old from Birrong – were arrested and still helping detectives with their inquiries on Sunday afternoon.

All three were off duty security guards and had been involved in the fight inside the bar, Mr Murdoch said.

“We are canvassing a quantity of CCTV,” he said.

“The death is being treated as suspicious and we will continue to treat it as suspicious until the evidence tells us otherwise.”

He said police were trying to determine whether the man fell into the water or was pushed.

The man’s family were devastated, Mr Murdoch said.

Police have formed Strike Force Southdown – including detectives from the Homicide Squad – to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

A critical incident investigation team will review the actions of police as part of standard procedure.

“They did their absolute best to try and rescue this fellow but were unsuccessful,” Mr Murdoch said.
