Drivers urged to slow down near accidents

The death of a man who’d stopped to help victims of a car crash in Sydney’s west is a “tragic reminder” that motorists should slow down when approaching an accident, a road safety campaigner says.

A 42-year-old, who is understood to be a father, was struck by a car after he stopped to help people involved in a three-car pile-up on the Hume Highway at Warwick Farm just before 8.30pm (AEST) on Saturday.

He suffered extensive injuries after a fourth car hit the wreckage and died at the scene.

Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) spokesman Peter Frazer said the death of the “Good Samaritan” highlighted the need for motorists to adjust their driving to the conditions of the road.

“His loss is yet another tragic reminder that drivers must slow down when approaching an incident, so that those who are assisting can do so safely,” Mr Frazer said.

“As drivers we have to actively look after each other out on the road.

“We all have a role to play in protecting each other.”

Mr Frazer’s 23-year-old daughter, Sarah, was fatally run down by a truck driver in February after her car had broken down on the Hume Highway, south of Mittagong, in the state’s Southern Highlands.

Tow truck driver Geoff Clark, 40, was also killed in the accident after he stopped to help.

SARAH has subsequently campaigned for safer highway breakdown lanes in NSW, leading to a 23,000-strong petition being presented to NSW parliament in April.

The petition calls for the width of all breakdown lanes to meet the minimum national standard of 2.5 metres.

It also wants a “slow down move over” law to be enacted requiring passing drivers who see hazard lights on a road side vehicle to “slow down to half the posted speed limit and move into an adjacent lane away from the vehicle/s displaying the flashing hazard lights”.

Police said Saturday’s accident highlighted how alert people needed to be when helping others on the road.

“Just be cautious,” Inspector Brendan Sharwood told AAP.

“They have got to take the situation into context and be extremely vigilant about the location and exactly where they are at, the volume of traffic and weather conditions.”

Police have conducted blood tests on the drivers involved in the crash who will be formally interviewed at a later stage.
