Police have called for a truce between warring families who appear to have mistakenly targeted the Sydney home of an innocent woman in a drive-by shooting.
One of at least four bullets struck the bedroom where the woman was sleeping about 12.15am (AEDT) today at a townhouse at Northmead, in Sydney’s west.
Parramatta Local Area Commander Peter Marcon believes the Northmead shooting may have been meant for someone else in the area who is known to police.
“The occupants of that address; there was nothing in their past that we believe would cause this sort of incident,” he told reporters in Sydney.
He called for an end to the shootings.
“Whilst they may not be concerned about their own safety, the way these are heading it could be a member of their family that gets hurt or killed,” Superintendent Marcon said.
“It could be their mum, their dad, brother, sister, even grandparents.
“Perhaps it’s time to have a truce.”
At least one other bullet penetrated the lounge-room window of the townhouse, which is located at the end of an enclosed driveway.
Neighbours reported hearing a car drive away but police do not have much information about the vehicle used in the attack.
Supt Marcon says detectives will consult with Strike Force Felix, which was established after the reporting of seven shootings since last Thursday in other areas of western Sydney.
Police believe outlaw bikie members and Middle Eastern criminal elements were responsible for those incidents.
However, he said Sydney residents shouldn’t be overly concerned.
“There does not appear to be a pattern of random shootings going on in Sydney,” Supt Marcon said.
“The shootings that we’re aware of all had specific targets.”
