Draw Something maker bought by Zynga

OMGPOP, the maker of the wildly popular mobile game Draw Something, has just been snapped up by social game giant Zynga for the reported sum of US$210 million.

AllThingsD cited unnamed sources overnight saying that Zynga’s announcement was imminent, before the company made it official early this morning.

Zynga wouldn’t confirm the final number, but the original report says that the company paid US$180 million for OMGPOP, plus an additional US$30 million in employee retention payments. TechCrunch had originally pegged the deal at between US$150 million and US$250 million

Although OMGPOP has been around for some time, Zynga likely became interested in the firm after its game Draw Something became a huge hit in the App Store. Draw Something, which is similar to board game Pictionary, retails for just 99 cents in the App Store, and was downloaded over 20 million times in its first five weeks of availability.

In an announcement to the market, Zynga CEO and founder Mark Pincus said that he is thrilled about the acquisition, and that OMGPOP will still work at creating original IP moving forward.

“We’re honoured to have the opportunity to partner with and support such an innovative team of creative inventors,” Pincus said.

Dan Porter, CEO of OMGPOP, moved to assure players that the Zynga acquisition won’t change the Draw Something game experience.

“The game will stay true to you know and what you love, and it’s my solemn vow that the magic of Draw Something will not change. I know without a doubt that Zynga is the right partner for OMGPOP,” he said in a statement.

In addition to Draw Something, Zynga will acquire a host of online games that OMGPOP offers, including Checkers, Pool and others. It’s Draw Something, though, that Zynga is probably most interested in.

Zynga shares are up 6.35 per cent to US$14.24 following rumours about the acquisition.
