Dozens of armed rebels killed in Syria

In Damascus, Syrian troops killed tens of armed men in the countryside as they cleared several districts around the city on Wednesday. Many others were also arrested in the clearing operation.

Much of the city is now clear and safe although clashes continue on the outskirts.

Government forces also inflicted heavy losses on militants after attacking one of their command centers in the Salahuddin neighborhood in the northwestern city of Aleppo. One hundred-fifty armed men were killed during the raid.

Elsewhere in the western governorate of Homs, the Syrian soldiers killed a large number of rebels in an attack on a tunnel they were using as a hideout in the city of al-Qusayr.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.

Western states have been calling on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. However, Russia and China are strongly opposed to the Western drive to oust Assad.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals, mostly from Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan.
