Dorling blasts cuts to TAFE

Year-to-date enrolments at the Gordon are up four per cent on last year, following record growth over the past five years.

“Staff at The Gordon have worked incredibly hard to create opportunities in a now highly competitive market and such announcements will be very disappointing and concerning for our staff,” Gordon CEO Grant Sutherland said.

Geelong Mayor John Mitchell said the TAFE cuts were a huge disappointment for the region.

“While the State Government has had a tough time in balancing their budget, in these times I would have thought that, whilst there might not need to be an increase in TAFE services, we certainly wouldn’t be looking at cuts,” he said.

Mr Dorling said the timing of the cuts was bad for Geelong.

“Any adjustment for their budget, big or small, will be bad for Geelong,” he said.

Meanwhile, the State Government started the unenviable task of selling their “tough love” budget.

Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos said Bellbrae had been identified by the Country Fire Authority as a priority project as part of a $23 million investment in CFA stations.

“This important funding will ensure local CFA volunteers have the best facilities to help them do their great work in protecting local communities,” Mr Katos said.

The CFA anticipates the new facilities at Bellbrae will be constructed within the coming financial year.
