A smile was shining on Ahmed’s face as he was breaking his fast with his family during a Ramadan evening.
But the smile turned into grimness when he saw a young child lying on a hospital bed in a TV commercial. The ad calls on people to donate to help conduct heart surgeries for ill children.
“I can’t take any more of these ads,” the father of two told Anadolu Agency. “Every Ramadan, there is a flood of donation ads, which leaves us in total depression.”
Every Ramadan, charity organizations broadcast several TV ads designed to lure donations from people for various causes, from curing illness to helping the poor.
One of the charities, the Magdy Yaqoub Heart Center in Aswan, runs a commercial calling on people to donate for carrying out heart surgeries for ill children.
Some NGOs even went to use superstars to lure donations as the Orman charity, which is using retired football star Mahmoud al-Khatib to encourage people to donate for building homes for the poor.
Some actors also appear on TV to invite people to donate like Mohamed Sobhi, who urge people to offer money for building new neighborhoods for people living in the slums.
But the spike in the number of the ads, which are aired in the commercial breaks of soap operas, and their frequency have bothered many Egyptians.
“The donation ads only aim to cause depression,” Yasmine elghetany wrote on Twitter.
Fatma al-Alfi says that the increase in the number of the donation ads show as if there is no government in the country.
“Truly, the donation ads have become intolerable,” al-Alfi wrote on Facebook. “Ramadan is not a month for collecting money from the poor for the poor.”
