Donald Trump furious as Miss USA contender labels the contest ‘trashy’

But it is her further claim that the show, won by Miss Rhode Island Olivia
Culpo, was rigged and indeed “fraudulent” which has landed the
26-year-old psychology student in legal trouble.

In a posting on her Facebook page, she wrote the day after the contest: “I
can no longer be affiliated in any way with an organisation I consider to be
fraudulent, lacking in morals, inconsistent, and in many ways trashy.”

She claimed fellow contestant Miss Florida saw a list of the top five
finalists before they were announced, proving, she said, the show was
rigged. More used to watching from the front row as the contestants make a
point of publicly thanking him, Mr Trump took a dim view of this challenge
to his authority. He immediately threatened to sue.

Mr Trump, who flatly rejects any claims of rigging of the contest, told NBC’s Today
Show
: “She said some really strong things. When she’s using the
word ‘fraud,’ that’s pretty strong, so we’re going to be suing her on that
basis.”

Instead, the show’s organisers have suggested that Miss Pennsylvania’s
resignation may have had something to do with the murky world of gender
politics.

Last month, after legal threats from a transsexual contestant born a man who
wanted to take part in the Miss Canada 2012 competition, the organisation
responsible for Miss Universe – the title Miss USA and the other national
winners will ultimately compete for – announced that transgender contestants
would in future be eligible for their beauty pageants.

The Miss USA group issued an email they claimed had been sent by Miss
Pennsylvania in which she allegedly said: “I refuse to be part of a
pageant system that has so far and so completely removed itself from its
foundational principles as to allow and support natural born males to
compete in it. This goes against every moral fibre of my being.”

If true, her position is somewhat different from that of Miss Rhode Island,
who is widely seen as having clinched the Miss USA title with a very
on-message response to a tricky query in a question round about the decision
to allow transgender contestants to compete.

“I believe it’s a free country,” she breathed, without missing a
beat.

Miss Monnin took to the airwaves on Friday herself to insist that her reasons
for relinquishing her title were not related to her views on transgender
contestants.

“I know what I heard and I know what I witnessed,” she said. “My
message is simple. I would like the truth to be known.”

Mr Trump, though, is convinced it is a case of sour grapes: “She lost and
if you look at her compared to the people who were in the top 15, you would
understand why she’s not in the top 15. It’s a very, very sad situation.”
