Dominique Strauss Kahn: US ‘perp walk’ was terrible

“There is an Arabic saying. An army of lions led by a sheep will always be
defeated by an army of sheep led by a lion,” he said. “The European system
is built in a way that no hard decisions can be made.” DSK also said that
Europe’s banking sector is dangerously weak.

“The banking sector in Europe is sick, very sick, much more than people say,”
said the former French finance minister. “It has to be really cleaned up
before growth will come back.”

Mr Strauss-Kahn stepped down from his IMF job over the chambermaid’s
allegations, despite insisting that the encounter was consensual.

Miss Diallo told police that a naked Mr Strauss-Kahn tried to force himself on
her while she was cleaning his hotel suite, dragging her into the bathroom
and trying to remove her underwear.

Forensic evidence showed that a sexual encounter had occurred and a grand jury
indicted him on seven counts, including sexual abuse and attempted rape, but
prosecutors dropped the charges after concluding that Miss Diallo had lied
about some details of the alleged attack.

Miss Diallo then sued Mr Strauss-Kahn in civil court. The two sides settled
late last year for an undisclosed sum.

Last month, a prosecutor in Lille, northern France, recommended dropping
charges of “aggravated pimping” against him in a sprawling investigation
into an international vice ring.

He also faced allegations of attempted rape in 2003 against a French writer,
Tristane Banon. But prosecutors said the statute of limitations had passed
and the case could not be pursued.

He has denied the allegations and has since filed a countersuit in France,
alleging slander.

The CNN interview, which will be aired in full later on Wednesday, appears to
be part of Mr Strauss-Kahn’s carefully orchestrated drive towards public
rehabilitation.

His international conference career as an eminent economist has taken off and
last month he was invited to give his expert opinion before a Senate
committee looking into tax evasion.

Some French politicians were appalled, with one Right-wing senator saying his
presence in the upper house of parliament was bad for “the dignity of
politicians”.
