Domestic violence increasing in Thailand

According to a survey released by Grant Thornton consultancy firm, more than 27,000 Thai women received medical treatment as a result of sexual harassment or domestic violence in 2011.

The foundation says only 1,300 of 27,000 victims reported their abusers to authorities in 2011, as many women feel too humiliated or shameful to do so.

In a family oriented society as Thailand, victims are afraid that their relatives may not accept the truth. Some of them are even threatened not to report to police.

Thai women associations have demanded that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra find urgent effective ways to protect victims. They have also asked for a fund to focus on projects that help them gain financial independence.

Most women associations of Thailand, the first country in the region with a female prime minister, hope that the government will place a high priority on gender discrimination and violence against women.
