On Wednesday afternoon, an elderly dog died inside of a burning home on E. Wasatch Blvd., in Layton, Utah.
According to Thursday’s Standard-Examiner, that dog, a 13-year-old golden retriever mix, died a hero.
The senior dog, named “Jake,” successfully roused his slumbering guardian as the home filled with smoke. The woman, whose name has not been released, was forced to escape the blaze through a window.
Tragically, she was unable to coax her hero to follow.
The woman’s husband, Ron Barningham, explained what happened during the heartbreaking event:
The room was so full of smoke, she couldn’t get out, so she had to go out the window,”
“And she couldn’t lift or carry Jake, so he died.”
Jake had been a part of the Barningham’s family since he was just a puppy. All of the contents of the home were destroyed, but nothing more valuable than the family’s loyal friend.
