Dispatch: Despair and delight on polling day in Russia

However, despite the claims of rigging and the tense atmosphere at
Masterskaya, it was clear that some Russians came out in genuine support of
Putin. Earlier in the day, The Daily Telegraph visited No 180 polling
station in a school on Second Frunzenskaya Street in southern Moscow, where
an observer said nothing illegal had taken place.

Tatyana Stolyarova, 86, emerged from the doors leaning on a stick. “I
voted for Putin, who else?” she said. “He doubled my pension in
the last ten years and everything he does is good.”

Alexander Kargatiyev, 62, a driver for the Russian foreign ministry,
interrupted to say he had voted for Gennady Zyuganov, the veteran communist,
and that it was unhealthy for the same leader to stay at the top.

But Stolyarova prodded Kargartiyev in the leg with her stick and replied: “Rubbish.
Putin is moral, strong and right. Whenever there’s an emergency, he’s there.
If there’s a fire, he’s there. If there’s a drought, he’s there. He saves us
all.”
