Disaster aid available for Melbourne

Melbourne residents affected by hail and flash flooding on Christmas Day can get federal government assistance.

The storms on Sunday brought with them huge hailstones, torrential rain, flash flooding and even a tornado.

Insurance companies said more than 3000 homes were damaged.

Those in the worst-hit areas of Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs will be able to get emergency relief assistance of up to $1200 to cover emergency shelter, food, clothing and other personal items.

They could also be eligible for emergency re-establishment assistance of up to $30,000 to help with clean-up and rebuilding costs.

Federal Emergency Management Minister Robert McClelland said the federal and Victorian governments were committed to helping affected families.

“They [the storms] could not have come at a worse time, striking just when many households were looking forward to relaxing on Christmas Day with family and friends,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The commonwealth government, through Emergency Management Australia, will continue to work closely with the Victorian government to support families and communities through the recovery process.”

At least half of the damage sustained in the ferocious storms was to vehicles, the Insurance Council of Australia said.

About 5000 claims had already been lodged with insurance companies, with thousands more expected as people return from holidays.

Insurance Council of Australia CEO Rob Whelan said those lodging claims were unlikely to experience the same sort of controversy flood victims in Victoria and Queensland did early this year, when some received insurance payouts while their neighbours did not, depending on the way their insurers defined flood.

“This particular storm is really about flash flooding and hail damage. The vast majority of claims are around flash flooding and hail damage and all policies cover that,” Mr Whelan said.

He believed half of insurance policies would cover flood damage to houses near rivers.
