According to a detailed study carried out on Friday 22 June, many disabled families are struggling for survival as savage cuts to social benefits shredded the welfare “safety net”.
The study shows that disabled people’s carers have seen their benefits or social income cut by £500 million for the last two years, resulting in poverty, social isolation and exposing them to the risk of declining mental health.
The study has also warned that disabled people’s quality of life is expected to continue in deterioration at least for the next three years, as a further £9 billion of predicted cuts to disability allowances has been agreed.
The thinktank Demos and Scope, published a report saying “Although nearly everyone faces tough times in this current economic climate, disabled people are hit particularly hard as a result of lower income, higher costs, fewer support services and unpredictable health conditions,”.
“Disabled people are facing spiralling living costs at the same time their financial support and local social services are falling away. Yet this is just the tip of the iceberg and there are further cuts looming”, said Richard Hawkes, chief executive of Scope.
The report found that families were forced to rely on the help of various charities and family to survive due to the lack of state support. The report also stressed that these incidences were short term fixes instead of sustainable solutions.
