‘Dinosaur eggs’ discovered in Chechnya (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Fossilized “dinosaur eggs” have been excavated in southern Russia’s Republic of Chechnya. Locals are excited about prospects the discovery might open for their tourism industry. Scientists are doubtful.

The discovery was made near the village of Khimoy during road construction works, reports Russia’s Channel Five network. The workers broke open a rock and noticed sphere-like structures that were “sticking out.”

“We’ve found about 40 eggs so far, the exact number has not been established,” a senior geologist at the Chechen State University, Said-Emin Dzhabrailov, told Russia’s NTV channel.  “There could be many more under the ground.”

Dzhabrailov says his group was travelling in the region to examine remote waterfalls. The war made the region inaccessible for a long time and many areas remain largely unexplored.

Another scientist from the Chechen State University, Magomed Alkhazurov, suggested that the “eggs” belonged to large herbivorous dinosaurs. Some of them have now been sent for scientific examination in the city of Yessentuki in southern Russia’s Stavropol Region.

The world media, used to somewhat more gruesome news from Chechnya, have quickly picked up on the news. And yet, trained eyes of scientists outside the region remained unconvinced.

“These are no dinosaur eggs. This is some kind of sand rock,” says Dr. Aleksandr Averianov of the Institute of Zoology in St. Petersburg. “Dinosaur eggs have a different shell structure.”

Other scientists who have appeared on various Russian television channels agree, saying that the formations are of a geological nature.

However, locals seem to be excited by the discovery regardless of the verdict, saying that it will help boost local tourism. The news has already attracted many Chechens who are flocking to the area from various parts of Chechnya. This attention has prompted local authorities to leave most of the “spheres” in the rock and put the site under protection.
