AUSTRALIAN forces have been involved in an operational incident in Afghanistan, the Defence Department says.

Details of the incident in Oruzgan province are not immediately clear, but there are no Australian Defence Force casualties, a statement from the Department of Defence says.

A spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said the incident may have injured civilians, the ABC reported.

The Australian Defence Force will work with the International Security Assistance Force to determine the facts of the incident and any necessary follow-up actions, the Department of Defence statement says.

NO VC FOR SIMPSON OR 13 OTHER DIGGERS .

Australian troops have begin their pullout from the war-torn country after suffering nine fatalities and 249 wounded since 2002. More than a third of the deaths were caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

In the past 2 1/2 years there have also been 191 allegations of mistreatment made against Australian troops by those taken into custody. Of these, 170 relate to treatment or an incident at the point of capture.

To date, 185 of these allegations have been considered and assessed as being unfounded. Six remain under review.
