Digger surprises girlfriend with ring at airport

Most of the 200 Diggers returning from their six-month deployment in Afghanistan today felt a sense of relief on the flight home.

Not Warrant Officer Martyn Voormeulen.

He had a mission to execute on arrival at Brisbane Airport that had his stomach tied up in knots.

Thankfully Operation Marriage Proposal, conducted in the airport’s arrivals area in front of a cheering crowd, went off without a hitch.

Warrant Officer Voormeulen had a whole speech rehearsed but hardly had the ring out of his pocket before he had his answer from girlfriend of six years Jenette McNeilly.

“As soon as I pulled out the ring box it was ‘Oh my God, Oh my God… it minimised what I was able to shoot out,” the Brisbane resident told ninemsn.

He said the last couple of years had been tough for the two of them and her strength of will and resilience had made him realise he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.

“And over the last six months we have grown even closer,” he said.

“You know how they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder.”

Next is the wedding, which Warrant Officer Voormeulen plans to conduct with “military precision”.
