Entertainment icon Dick Clark was paid tribute to at the 48th Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday, April 7, 2013. The ACM Awards were held at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and televised live on CBS Television Network. The ACM Awards were hosted by country stars Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan.
Reba, a country legend herself, got on stage to announce that the Academy is renaming the Artist of the Decade Award to the Dick Clark Artist of the Decade Award. Reba cited Clark’s help and encouragement to artists in the industry. Over the decades, Clark helped to form the ACM Awards, as they became one of the biggest events in the industry.
The last two artists to receive the Artist of the Decade Award were George Strait and Garth Brooks, so it was only fitting that they should perform in the entertainment icon’s honor. Brooks sang half of his Class of 1989 classic “The Dance.” The Brooks and Strait sang an all-to-short duet, “The Cowboy Rides Away,” and were honored by an enthusiastic standing ovation from the audience.
Dick Clark passed away almost a year ago, on April 17, 2012. Dick Clark began producing the Academy of Country Music Awards in 1979 and helped introduce audiences all over America to the most talented artists in country music. Ryan Seacrest talks about passing of Dick Clark
Dick Clark’s son, R.A. Clark, stated in a press release, “It is truly appropriate that we pay tribute to my father, longtime ACM Awards executive producer Dick Clark. As one of the current executive producers and Dick’s son, I’m honored that George and Garth graciously accepted my personal request to pay tribute to a man we all loved.”
Performer George Strait stated in a press release from ACM, “Dick helped make country music accessible to a larger fan base and his efforts will not be forgotten. Garth and I were so grateful when we each received the ACM Artist of the Decade Award, so it’s only fitting that we’ll be honoring him with this tribute performance at the ACMs” .
“I commend the Academy on naming the ACM Artist of the Decade Award after Dick Clark. Although there is no award the entertainment industry has that can match the magnitude of the star Dick Clark was, and still is, it is an honor to get to be a part of the Academy’s tribute to him. There may be others who have contributed as much to the music industry, but there is definitely no one that has contributed more than Dick Clark. He was music’s best friend, and a dear friend to me,” said Garth Brooks.
Recipients of the ACM Artist of the Decade Award include George Strait in 2009, Garth Brooks in 1998, Alabama in 1988, Loretta Lynn in 1979 and Marty Robbins in 1969. The ACM Dick Clark Artist of the Decade Award is an Academy honor bestowed on a country music artist only once every decade.
