Mr Cheney, who has appeared frail in his latest public appearances, became a
bogeyman for the opponents of the Bush administration’s prosecution of its
war on terror, using legalised torture, extraordinary rendition and the
Guantanamo Bay prison camp.
Pondering Mr Cheney’s offer to resign before he sought a second term in 2004,
even President George W Bush admitted that his deputy was seen as “dark
and heartless – the Darth Vader of the administration”.
