The family of Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor has welcomed the United Nations’ calls for her to be freed from a Libyan jail.

Ms Taylor and three of her colleagues from the International Criminal Court have been accused of smuggling documents to the son of deposed leader Moamar Gaddafi.

The 15-member UN Security Council has issued a statement calling for the group to be freed immediately.

The former Brisbane woman’s sister Danielle Taylor says the UN’s involvement is positive news.

“We’re extremely happy with all the support that we’ve got and obviously having the backing of that … adds a lot more strength to trying to get Melinda released,” she said.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr is buoyed by international support for Ms Taylor but he says it will not expedite her release.

Senator Carr says the UN backing will strengthen diplomatic efforts but ultimately it is in the hands of Libyan officials.

“I’ve seen nothing that would give us hope that Melinda’s release is imminent,” he told Saturday AM.

“Notheless we’ve got our ambassador on the ground, we’ve flown consular staff in to help. We’ve got a good relationship with the ICC team.

“The indications I’ve got from our ambassador on the ground, David Ritchie, supported by consular staff we’ve shifted into Libya, is that the Libyans have taken the matter seriously, they talk about a grave threat to national security and they talk about the need to have a full investigation into this.

“But if our representations are working, and yesterday I spoke to the new French foreign minister Laurent Fabius, I spoke to the Canadian foreign minister, I’ve spoken to the foreign minister of the UAE, al Nahyan, separately and we’ve worked closely with the ICC.

“I mean if we get this result sooner than we expect that would be terrific. “
