Speaking at a joint press conference with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati in Beirut on Thursday, Rahimi said Tehran strongly supports the reform program initiated by President Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria, and is categorically opposed to the killing of people.
The senior Iranian official also lashed at attempts made by certain states to arm and fund the terrorist groups fighting against the Syrian government, stressing that such moves would only spread bloodshed in Syria.
However, he commented, “Those countries that had joined hands to topple the Syrian government through illegal or illegitimate means have now despaired.”
Rahimi pointed out that Syria’s reform process should be carried out in a peaceful fashion, and the country’s problems should be settled through domestic avenues.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.
While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
In interviews with Israeli news outlets over the past few months, the Syrian armed rebels have clearly expressed their vision for the future of Syria and their interest in establishing ties with the Tel Aviv regime, which has occupied and annexed Syria’s Golan Heights since 1967.
