RENO, NV — For almost 30 minutes, officers kicked, tasered, and beat Justin Thompson, 35.
Justin Thompson had a mental disorder and was in the midst of a breakdown when the beating occurred.
Throughout the ordeal, he told officers multiple times that he was unable to breathe.
It happened after Thompson was arrested in August of 2016.
Thompson had a bipolar episode which led to a domestic battery complaint, though he had no criminal background.
Officials noticed that Thompson was showing signs of a mental breakdown, so he was placed in a holding cell rather than being booked.
Inside the cell, Thompson’s mind continued to deteriorate, as he urinated on himself and desperately curled into fetal position.
It was when guards tried to extract him to take mugshots that the situation became even worse.
As they were trying to put Thompson in a stretcher, more than six deputies were involved in driving knees into him, kicking him, tasing him, and verbally degrading him.
Thompson can be heard warning that he can’t breathe, to which a deputy responds “You’re not being compliant Justin. We could’ve rolled you through the process but you’re being a d*** about the whole thing.”
For the next 20 minutes, deputies continued the ordeal until Thompson finally stopped breathing.
He was then brought to a hospital and put on life support while his brain activity came to a halt.
His family was not told about it until five days later, according to reports.
