Defence helps in Wagga Wagga cleanup

Defence personnel are helping locals clean up Wagga Wagga after the floods.

Colonel David Hay, commander of the defence task force, said the scale of devastation had been heartbreaking.

“But I am encouraged by the way in which the numerous organisations and agencies have pulled together to rescue and assist those who are suffering at this time,” he said in a statement.

“With the emergency passing in most of the affected areas, we can now begin to look at the next phase in helping the New South Wales government at this challenging time.”

Col Hay said so far defence personnel had assisted in evacuating people from flood areas and transporting SES and other emergency personnel. They had also helped with filling and distributing sandbags and door knocking.

He said no date had been set for the conclusion of the aid.

As well as personnel, the ADF was providing transport and equipment in Shepparton and Nathalia, northern Victoria.

“Our soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen will keep working until the job is done,” Col Hay said.
