Death of Tour winner’s dad a mystery

It remains a mystery how the Australian father of Britain’s Tour de France winner died.

Bradley Wiggins on Sunday became the first Briton to win the gruelling cycle race.

But as he stood on the winner’s podium calls were being renewed for information about the death of his father Gary in suspicious circumstances near Newcastle, NSW, four years ago.

Gary Wiggins, himself a former champion cyclist in the 1970s and 80s, died after being found unconscious in a street in Aberdeen in January 2008.

A strike force including homicide squad detectives was set up to investigate, but a coroner delivered an open finding, saying Gary Wiggins died after being assaulted but it was unclear whether the head injury that killed him happened during the assault.

Gary’s sister, Glenda Hughes, who lives in Victoria, said she hadn’t given up on finding an answer.

“I’m hoping that all this publicity might just stir something up in somebody,” she told the Newcastle Herald on Monday.

“I’m hoping that what Bradley is doing will stir something in someone to come forward and tell us what happened.”

Detective Sergeant Nicky Hardy of Hunter Valley Local Area Command told AAP the investigation into Gary Wiggins’ death had been suspended.

“All avenues were investigated at the time,” she said.

She added that police had told the coronial inquest in 2009 that prior to his death, Gary Wiggins had been known to fall over while drunk.

Bradley Wiggins grew up in London after Gary separated from his wife Linda, and the father and son didn’t renew their relationship for 14 years.

Commenting on the matter last week, Bradley said, “I’ve put that one to bed.”
