LONGMEADOW, Mass. (INTELLIHUB) — Shockingly, the Massachusetts Department of Health has confirmed that mosquitoes in Plymouth County have indeed been infected with the deadly West Nile Virus feared by so many.

“West Nile virus (WNV) is most commonly transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. You can reduce your risk of being infected with WNV by using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing to prevent mosquito bites. There are no medications to treat or vaccines to prevent WNV infection. Fortunately, most people infected with WNV will have no symptoms. About 1 in 5 people who are infected will develop a fever with other symptoms. Less than 1% of infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, neurologic illness.”, reads the Center for Disease Control’s official website.

Local authorities and news agencies are urging people to wear long clothes as a first line defense against infected insects lurking about.

Moreover, infected mosquitoes have also been found as far west as Tulsa, Oklahoma.

KSN.com reported:

Tulsa Health Department officials say a sampling of mosquitoes from Tulsa County has tested positive for the potentially deadly West Nile virus.

The department operates a mosquito surveillance program and mosquito traps are set in various locations throughout the county. Samples are collected and tested weekly for the virus and areas are sprayed in an effort to control the mosquito population.

Some fear a major outbreak is on the way.

The virus also was reported to have killed two birds in California.
