Deadly jellyfish close four Qld beaches

Four far north Queensland beaches have been closed after a woman was stung, possibly by a potentially deadly jellyfish.

The 45-year-old woman was taken to Cairns Base Hospital in a stable condition after being stung by what authorities suspect was an Irukandji jellyfish.

She was stung at Cairns’ Palm Cove shortly before 1.45pm (AEST) on Tuesday.

Cairns Regional Council has closed Palm Cove, Ellis Beach, Clifton Beach and Kewarra Beach until further notice.

Irukandji jellyfish have been blamed for two deaths in Australia in the past decade, both in Queensland in 2002.
