Gen Allen is currently under investigation for sending hundreds of allegedly “flirtatious”
emails to Mrs Kelley, raising further questions about the judgment of senior
officers. He denies have an affair with Mrs Kelley, as does Mr Petraeus.
However in her first public words since the scandal broke, Mrs Kelley said she
had been unfairly maligned, writing dozens of emails to her local mayor’s
office in Tampa to complain about her treatment at the hands of the city and
the media.
“The truth will one day prevail,ヤ Mrs Kelley said in one of several email
released by the mayor’s office, in which she complained that モthe media
should focus on the criminal that stalked all of usヤ ヨ an apparent reference
to Mrs Broadwell.
Earlier in the week Mrs Kelley, who was appointed an honorary consul to South
Korea, had dialled 911 to ask for “diplomatic protection”, but
said she was furious that the police had apparently leaked the tapes of her
call to the press, which included her mobile phone number.
“I have been receiving threats all night,” she remonstrated with the
mayor, “I’m scared and I cannot believe what my City – in which I have
contributed so much of my love, time, money and leadership, has now done to
me and my innocent family.”
Other candid email exchanges disclosed yesterday also demonstrate just how
successful the 37-year-old was in beguiling the top echelons of the US
military.
In numerous conversations with Bob Buckhorn, the Mayor of Tampa, and his
office, Mrs Kelley referred to dinners in Washington with both Mr Petraeus
and Gen Allen.
She also discusses her assistance to General James Mattis, the current
Commander of US Central Command and his deputy, Vice Admiral Robert Harward.
The emails show that 1: Mrs Kelly and her husband joined Mr Petraeus for his
59th birthday; 2: On one occasion she enjoyed dinner with both Mr Petraeus
and Gen Allen together; and 3: Both men appeared to look to Mrs Kelley for
help when a Florida-based radio DJ threatened to deep fat fry a copy of the
Koran.
In one email in December last year she wrote: “We just got back from
spending the weekend with the Petraeus (sic) (it was Dave’s 59th birthday)
and he said to send you his best! (I tell (sic) him how fun You are!)”
And in a second email exchange on May 14 Mrs Kelley referred to herself as the “Ambassador
to the Coalition” as she took a groups of visiting dignitaries from
Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nepal on a trade mission around the Tampa Bay
area, “with the great assistance” of Gen Mattis and Vice Admiral
Harward.
In relation to the threat to deep fry the Koran, Mrs Kelley’s emails again
show the level of trust Mr Petraeus and Gen Allen appeared to place in her.
In 2010, when Pastor Terry Jones planned to burn a copy of the Korean in
protest against a planned Islamic centre near Ground Zero in New York, the
threat caused widespread violence in Afghanistan.
Writing on March 7, Mrs Kelley said: “I have Petraeus & Allen both
emailing me about getting his dealt with.” In a second email on March 7
she added: “They asked me to get involved, like I did when it happened
with the Pastor.”
