David Low Way collapse – latest details

Commuters are being urged to revise their travel routes in and around Coolum after a section of David Low Way collapsed on Sunday night.

Local Disaster Coordinator Andrew Ryan says the road was closed to north and south bound traffic between Tritonia Drive and the Coolum Aquatic Centre.

“The Department of Main Roads and council engineers are currently examining the damaged section of David Low Way which is about 200m north of the Coolum Sports Complex.

The slippage was caused by the failure of three pipes that run under David Low Way that drain runoff from Emu Mountain. The weakening of the road base and saturated material around the pipes eventually resulted in the substantial road slip.

Main Roads are planning to construct temporary side-tracks at the site over the next few days but the full construction and repair to the road will take weeks.

“The extent of the damage and how long it will take to repair will not be known for at least another 48 hours.”

He says school traffic is being allowed in from the southern end and access to the aquatic centre, the RSL and the Coolum Beach Baptist Church is also possible from the southern end.

“The cycleway to the west of David Low Way is open so this is great option that parents in particular may want to consider as far as getting their children to and from school.

“At this stage there is no possibility of vehicles travelling from Coolum to Noosa on the David Low Way,” says Mr Ryan.

Currently traffic control measures are in place on David Low Way and traffic was being diverted to Coolum-Yandina Road.

The ABC has been notified that the cycleway to the west of the site is still open and can be used.
