An asylum seeker in a Darwin detention centre has tried to take his own life, a refugee group claims.
The man, apparently from Iran, apparently took the action around 10.30pm (ACST) on Friday at the Northern Immigration Detention Centre.
The Refugee Action Coalition said the man was found still breathing by Serco staff managing the facility and was taken to hospital, but his condition is not known.
It is understood he had been in detention for about 20 months, the group said.
“There is no excuse for the damage that long-term detention is inflicting on asylum seekers and refugees,” said the Coalition’s spokesman, Ian Rintoul.
The incident comes a day after Serco broke up a roof-top protest at the detention centre.
