Darwin cyclone threat eases

The small Top End community of Wadeye is braced for a possible cyclone, but the threat to Darwin and the Tiwi Islands has eased.

Early on Wednesday the Bureau of Meteorology cancelled its cyclone warning for Darwin and some northern areas, including the Tiwi Islands.

But the cyclone warning remained for coastal and island communities from Dundee Beach to Kalumburu, in Western Australia.

“Thankfully it has taken a more southerly track than we originally anticipated,” said Todd Smith, manager of forecasting operations with the Bureau of Meteorology in Darwin.

“It hasn’t developed as we expected,” he said.

Forecasters say if a cyclone does develop from the low pressure system it will likely make landfall about 7pm (CST) on Wednesday near the border, between NT and WA.

Communities from Wadeye to Kununurra are in the danger zone.

Speaking from Wadeye early on Wednesday, the Thamarrurr Development Corporation’s Michael Schultz said heavy rain was falling and the sky was dark but there was little wind.

Mr Schultz said most organisations, including the post office and supermarket, had been closed ahead of the expected storm.

A meeting of the local Counter-Disaster Council was planned for Wednesday morning to decide whether to open public cyclone shelters.

Wadeye is an indigenous community of about 3000 people.

Despite the cyclone threat easing in Darwin, the city was lashed by strong winds and heavy rain early on Wednesday.

A severe weather warning for Darwin and nearby areas was issued at 7.21am (CST).

“The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should secure loose outside objects and seek shelter when the conditions deteriorate,” the warning said.

“Driving conditions may be hazardous – avoid flooded roads and water courses.”

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Graeme King said on Wednesday that 175mm of rain had fallen in the city and 137mm at Darwin Airport in a 24-hour period.

The chance of a cyclone forming off Australia’s northern coast remained high on Wednesday, but was low for Thursday and Friday. .

The NT government cancelled school for Wednesday in the territory and the Royal Darwin Hospital cancelled some elective surgeries in preparation for the approaching storm.
