The long-awaited $60 million expansion at Darwin Airport will double the amount of passengers and planes it can receive.

Construction on three new aircraft bays will be start next month, with the project to be finished by the end of next year.

The terminal expansion will add nearly 11,000 square metres, and include new check-in areas, departure lounges for both major airlines and baggage facilities.

Darwin Airport chief executive Ian Kew says the build will cause some some inconvenience at the airport, but customers will be pleased with the result.

“In simple terms we’ll be able to handle twice the number of passengers and planes, in any particular busy hour than we can today,” he said.

“So this is the biggest development project in the airport’s history since it was constructed in 1991.

“We’re very excited about it.”

The project was first announced in 2011 and construction had been due to start last year, with works set to be complete by next year.
