‘Cyprus can help ease Iran-EU tensions’

Addressing reporters at Larnaca airport on arrival for an official visit, Salehi said, “In view of the misunderstandings that have transpired between Iran and the European Union, it would be possible to take effective steps towards the reduction and removal of such misconceptions with the help of Cyprus.”

Iranian foreign minister further added that Cyprus has always taken a fair and reasonable position towards Middle East issues, particularly regarding Palestine, stressing, “This country is the closest EU state to the Middle East and has long assumed a productive and effective role.”

Salehi reiterated the significance of Cyprus to Iran, noting that the country’s leadership position in the European Union doubles its importance for Tehran, “and we hope to witness further improvement of ties between the two nations as well as between Iran and Europe.”

Heading a politico-economic delegation, Salehi arrived in Cyprus earlier on Tuesday.

The top Iranian diplomat will meet with Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly during his one-day visit to the eastern Mediterranean country.

The Iranian foreign minister will also extend Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s invitation to the Cypriot leader to take part in the next Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Tehran.

NAM, an international organization with 120 member states and 17 observer countries, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.

Cyprus will assume the 6-month presidency of the European Union from Denmark on July 1.
