Cyclone warning issued

Dr Andrew Tupper from the Bureau of Meteorology says a developing tropical low hovering over the Top End may develop into a cyclone with gusts to 110 kilometres per hour expected to develop late Saturday or early Sunday.

The area from Cape Don to Milingimby is under a Cyclone Warning, which means gale force winds could begin within 24 hours. Communities effected include Maningrida, Goulburn Islands and Croker Island.

Gales may develop later in coastal areas between Dundee Beach and Cape Don, including Darwin and the Tiwi Islands, and between Milingimbi and Nhulunbuy.

“In the last little while [the system] has started developing reasonably strongly, that does give the system better definition and it helps us to work out the warning strategy from now on,” says Dr Tupper.

“What we have now is quite a strong band of weather over the Arafura Sea, it’s the sort of feature that clearly indicates a developing system,” he says.

Peter Davies, Director of NT Emergency Services says communities are well prepared for a potential cyclone.

“The police have been out and about talking to all the people in the outstations so they’re all well aware of what’s going on,” he says.

Alex Julius, who runs a high-end fishing enterprise near Maningrida, says he isn’t overly concerned about the cyclone warning.

“We all get really hyped up about cyclones, it hasn’t even formed into a cyclone yet, it’s still a low.”

“If it crosses in the next couple of days, it won’t be that strong, and we’re that little bit inland, which seems to make a difference,” he says.

Mr Julius says Maningrida will be more vulnerable, and that there could be an issue with loose building materials from housing construction.

“I presume they’re organising to get it all strapped down and out of the way…that’s what causes the damage in the cyclone, it’s when loose materials get flying around.”

All residents from Cape Don to Milingimbi are being advised that now is the time to make final preparations to your home shelter or identify which public emergency shelter to use.

People are being advised to keep listening to the media for any weather updates or instructions, and log on to SecureNT for advice.
