Cyclone Irina kills 65 in Madagascar

Most of the victims are residents of the Ifanadiana district in the southeast of the Indian Ocean island, the BNGRC said on Monday.

The BNGRC added that three more people were missing but did not provide any more details.

An earlier report said that one person was killed when the storm passed over Madagascar last week, hitting the coasts of South Africa and Mozambique.

“A tree fell on a house and the roof collapsed,” leaving one man in Mozambique’s southern province of Gaza dead, an official said.

In Durban, beaches were closed as waves rose to heights of three-meters, local municipal spokesman Thabo Mofokeng noted. Ships were ordered not to leave the port of the city in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province.

Last month, tropical Cyclone Giovanna left 35 people dead, scores injured, and hundreds homeless after the storm pummeled Madagascar’s eastern shores.
