Cuts: Britain’s museums forced to close

Due to budget cuts, various galleries and museums are being shut down across the UK, according to a recent research on Monday 2 July.

This comes as cutbacks in Britain have now reached such a damaging level, that nearly a quarter of institutions have closed their sites down.

Schools with transport services have also been obliged to stop due to the spending cuts policy issued by the Tory led coalition government.

Earlier this year, a research conducted by the Museums Association (MA), saw that 11 percent of museums had shut down permanently, while 22 percent had closed down parts of their sites indefinitely or temporarily. Over half of the institutions had struggled and suffered from the budget cuts during the past 12 months, in which staff was reduced amongst 42 percent of those.

The director of the MA, Mark Taylor, told The Independent: “What is so sad is that some of these closures are forever. Some collections are in danger of rotting and rusting away along with the sense of place, history and community that they represent.”

The report from the MA warned that “many more” collections are “under threat” and that specialist skills for museums will be lost.
