Lennox Head-based Liberal MLC Catherine Cusack is taking leave from politics because she has been diagnosed with clinical depression.
Ms Cusack issued a statement late yesterday saying she will be regretfully taking leave to seek treatment for her illness.
She says she has been advised to focus solely on her recovery and has requested privacy.
Ms Cusack missed out on a ministerial portfolio when the O’Farrell Government took power. She had been the Coalition’s environment spokeswoman in opposition.
Her absence will make no difference to the numbers in the Upper House, with the Opposition saying they will give her pair.
Former NSW Opposition leader John Brogden, who suffers from depression and is now Lifeline’s national patron, says it is a positive step for Ms Cusack to have accepted her diagnosis.
“It’s more difficult to seek treatment for anything when you have a high profile,” Mr Brogden says.
“A diagnosis is important but an individual accepting the diagnosis and those around them accepting the diagnosis is just as important… accepting the diagnosis is critical, many people fight it or ignore it… accepting that diagnosis and going for treatment is the most significant thing.”
Mr Brogden was not diagnosed with depression until he attempted to take his own life in 2005.
He says he is pleased the stigma surrounding mental illness is slowly dissipating.
“I think the good revelation that we’re experiencing in our very lifetime is that people are talking about it,” Mr Brogden says.
“So there’s been a lot of societal change when it comes to mental health and it’s all for the positive.
“I wonder if we’d be having this conversation if Catherine had something like cancer… but we’re talking about the fact she has depression.”
Lifeline’s national 24 hour crisis support line is available on 13 11 14.
