‘Culture of dishonesty rising in No 10’

Watson urged the hacking inquiry to investigate the allegations that former PM’s press aid Andy Coulson misled journalists for a year, over the fact that Cameron rode the police horse loaned to former News International chief Rebekah Brooks.

Raisa, a police horse, was loaned to Brooks in 2008 by the Metropolitan Police. She reportedly returned the horse to the police force in 2010 in “a poor condition.”

Last week, Downing Street stated confusing messages regarding the issues, it first claimed that Cameron had strongly rejected the newspaper’s idea that he had ridden the horse.

However, Number 10 then said that the PM had “probably” ridden the horse before Brooks return it back to the police force.

Finally the PM himself admitted during a press conference that he had ridden the police horse. “A confusing picture has emerged. I think my staff have had to answer a lot of questions about horses.”

In his letter to No 10, Watson questioned Cameron’s former claims that Coulson did execellent job in a proper way while he was employed.

“If the investigation finds this claim is inaccurate, what steps are you taking to ensure that other potential incidents of wrongdoing are investigated?” Watson asked the PM in the letter.

“If these reports are true it would be a sign of, at worst, a culture of dishonesty developing in Downing Street or, at best, a failure by yourself to ensure the highest standards of integrity are maintained by your staff. In either case, how do you propose to address this?” he added.
