CSTO condemns EU sanctions against Belarus
MOSCOW, April 13 (Xinhua) — The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a military alliance, on Friday called it ” unacceptable” to mount economic pressures on Belarus.
The seven-member CSTO made the remarks in a statement issued by foreign ministers of six member states, including Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. Uzbek foreign minister didn’t sign the statement.
The CSTO said the measures adopted by the European Union (EU) against Belarus hurt the legitimate interests and the economic security of the CSTO member states.
They could also “harm mutually beneficial cooperation and development of the integration in Eurasia, undermine trust between the partners and eventually affect the stability and the security in the region,” according to the statement.
The ministers also stressed that only equal dialogue could facilitate the settlement to the dispute between Belarus and the EU.
Secretary General of CSTO Nikolai Bordyuzha on Thursday also slammed EU for its “unreasonable” sanctions against Minsk, which include travel restrictions on Belorussian judges and senior police officers.
EU’s sanctions against Belarus were said to be aimed at pressing Belorussian President Alexander Lukashenko to free all political prisoners.
CSTO groups Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
