The initial report had alleged that Ms Zhang herself was under investigation by the Chinese authorities, and barred from leaving the mainland. This, it said, was why the actress had not attended the Cannes film festival in order to promote her latest movie, a remake of Dangerous Liaisons.
However, Ms Zhang said she had been forced to skip the festival because she was re-shooting some scenes for another film, The Grandmasters, in southern China and that Wong Kar Wai, the director, would not give her permission to leave.
In 2010, Ms Zhang was forced to refute rumours that she had conducted an affair with a married businessman.
