What we’re doing at Mondoweiss can’t necessarily be measured in weeks, months, or even years. But over the last 12 months we’ve seen the stories Mondoweiss has championed for years finally break into the mainstream media.
That’s no accident. Here are five times this year that our work – at times stretching back over a decade – helped create breakthroughs in how the general public understands the Palestinian freedom struggle.
We need your help to keep telling the stories that change the narrative.
1. Call It Apartheid
This spring, Human Rights Watch and B’Tselem each released lengthy, meticulously documented reports that finally described the Israeli government’s form accurately: Apartheid. The credibility of these major NGOs convinced the media, elected officials, and other leaders to dare to use the “A word.” But, of course, Palestinians and others including former President Jimmy Carter and South African Bishop Desmond Tutu had been saying so for a long time already– even when Mondoweiss was one of the only outlets to cover them.
2. Ben & Jerry’s Divestment from Israel
The whole world paid attention when Ben & Jerry’s pulled its ice cream from the settlements. But only Mondoweiss was covering the determined ongoing work of Vermonters for Justice in Palestine and other allies for the many years they built their campaign before it burst upon the international scene, changing the perception of the efficacy of BDS and the perception of Israel.
Our coverage provides energy and insight for grassroots campaigns all around the globe – and helps change what’s possible. But we can’t do it without you.
3. Sally Rooney Declines an Israeli Publisher
A month or two after Ben and Jerry’s announced its decision, there was an uproar when celebrated Irish author Sally Rooney declined to work with an Israeli publisher who had a history of complicity with Israeli apartheid. This story spotlighted the power of cultural boycott and how younger generations of artists are drawing the parallels between different movements and insisting on consistency in their values. Mondoweiss, of course, was there covering cultural boycott as the movement grew over the last two decades.
4. NSO and Israeli Tech Under Fire
For years activists and organizers and folks on the ground have been talking about the pipeline between the Israeli Army and Israeli security and surveillance companies. Mondoweiss has thoroughly covered that story and unspooled its often complicated threads. Finally, this year, it became common knowledge when NSO’s invasive phone software crossed the line even for the U.S. government and Apple.
5. The El-Kurd Siblings Become Global Superstars
Mondoweiss has featured the work of Mohammed El-Kurd since he was a young teenager. Their brave, unapologetic voices broke into the mainstream this year, even being named as part of the Time 100. Their ascension, rooted in gut-wrenching experiences of dispossession and ethnic cleansing in East Jerusalem, marked a turning point in the discourse, as young Palestinians won new audiences precisely by refusing to mince their words, and changing the paradigm of what is not only possible, but necessary to say out loud. Mondoweiss is proud to have amplified their voices and stories and those of other Palestinian activists before others in the U.S. did.
By ignoring and silencing Palestinian voices, the media erases Palestinians from their own story. But together, we have the power to build the megaphone Palestinians deserve.
Will you help us meet this challenge with your gift today?
These stories are the result of years of efforts by campaigners and media like us who support them getting out the word, slowly but doggedly. I’m so proud to think about the role that Mondoweiss has played, and continues to play, in shifting the narrative. Will you give so we can keep telling the stories in 2022 that will be changing the world in 2023, 2025 and 2030?
