A couple in their sixties have been caught with 16kg of cannabis in the boot of their car.
Police say officers stopped the car on the Hume Highway at Mullengandra, in the NSW Riverina region, about 10.30pm (AEST) on Monday.
A search of the car allegedly revealed 16kg of the drug.
The male driver and his wife, both 66, were arrested and refused bail to appear in Albury Local Court on Tuesday.
Superintendent Stuart Smith from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said the arrests were among many made during the four-day crackdown, launched last week to coincide with the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
“Operation Stay Alert has produced results… including a number of cars stopped for Random Breath Testing where firearms, drugs and illegal cash was discovered,” Superintendent Smith said in a statement.
Two escapees from the Glen Innes Correctional Centre were also arrested and returned to custody after being detected riding a trail bike, he said.
