Costly bill after southeast Qld deluge

The damage bill for the five days of unrelenting rain that lashed southeast Queensland last month could run as high as $5 million.

The state and federal governments announced joint disaster relief funding for four southeast Queensland local government areas that suffered damage during last month’s deluge.

Some homes were flooded, hundreds of roads were closed and dozens of people were rescued from rushing floodwaters when a monsoonal trough dumped hundreds of millimetres of rain in some areas between January 24 and 28.

Federal Emergency Management Minister Robert McClelland said the damage bill could run as high as $5 million, but this figure could change.

“Local councils will have a clearer picture once in-depth damage inspections are completed,” he said in a statement.

“The Commonwealth will continue to share the cost of these repairs with the Queensland government.”

The Gold Coast, Logan, Scenic Rim and Sunshine Coast local governments can apply for relief funds to restore essential public assets or cover the cost of counter-disaster operations.

It means 31 Queensland councils are now eligible for the disaster relief funding, after widespread rain and flooding battered the state in recent weeks.
