TCP : An elderly Coptic woman was stripped naked and eight houses were set on fire by hundreds of Muslims people in Upper Egypt’s Minya, Coptic Bishop Marcus announced in a post on his official Facebook page Wednesday.
The incident took place Friday, but wasn’t reported until Wednesday when Bishop Marcus confirmed what happened. The attack happened when a divorced Muslim man incited violence against a Coptic man, Ashraf Abdo Atia, and his family for “having a relationship with his Muslim ex-wife” in the al-Karam village of Minya.
A total of 300 armed Muslims arrived at Atia’s house on May 20 at 8:00 p.m., but they found that Atia had left his home, Bishop Marcus said, adding that the group then set fire to eight houses and dragged Atia’s mother outside, beat her and stripped her of her clothes.
Six hours later, the police forces arrived and arrested six of the attackers who are still under investigation, Bishop Marcus continued.
Two days before the incident occurred, the Coptic family reported to the police that they had received threats over “a rumor” claiming their son was in relationship with the divorced woman.
Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria announced Thursday in a statement that he is following up the investigations with the concerned bodies.
Austria-visiting Pope Tawadros called on all the people to not misuse the Minya incident to incite a sectarian violence.
