Tehran, April 8, IRNA – Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said on Friday that Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia would achieve an important communication network by building railway track.
According to foreign media reports, Mammadyarov said constructing Rasht-Astara railway network was one of the issues that was discussed during the first tripartite meeting of Iranian, Russian and Azeri foreign ministers in Baku.
‘Azerbaijan and Iran would start construction of Azerbaijan-Iran joint railway bridge on April 20,’ he added.
Mammadyarov did not mention further details on the issue.
In a meeting on Thursday, Azeri Economy Minister Shahin Mostafaev and Managing Director of Iran’s Railway Company Mohsen Pour-Seyyed Aqaei discussed measures, taken for linking the two countries’ railway networks, within framework of completion of North-South Transport Corridor.
Mostafaev described the political will of the Azeri and Iranian presidents and the exchange of visits by the two countries’ officials aimed at expansion of ties as ‘important.’
The Azeri economy minister said that linking the two countries’ railway networks would create new opportunities for expansion of cooperation and promoting transit capacities.
He said that based on an agreement signed during recent visit of Azeri President Elham Aliyev to Iran, the preliminary works for starting the construction of railway bridge on Astara river along Iran-Azerbaijan joint border underway.
Iran’s Railway Company’s managing director in turn underlined importance of connecting the two countries’ railways for expansion of economic cooperation between the two countries.
