Conroy named a community visionary

Federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy, who is overseeing the government’s $36 billion national broadband network (NBN) project, has received an award from a New York-based think tank.

Senator Conroy has been named Intelligent Community Visionary of the year for 2012.

The award has announced by the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), a think tank that studies the use of information and communications technology.

The forum selected Senator Conroy for his “critical” role in transforming Australia’s digital future, under the NBN.

ICF co-founder Louis Zacharilla said Senator Conroy had displayed passion in developing a digital age infrastructure in one of the world’s most promising and unique nations.

“We recognise Senator Conroy as a kindred spirit for his effort to enable Australia to benefit from the broadband economy,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (AEDT).

“The enormous talents and intelligence of the communities of Australia will now be harnessed in a way that, thanks to his absolute tenacity and determination, will have economic and social benefit for generations.”

Previous recipients of Visionary of the Year include Wikia founders Jimmy Wales and Angela Beesley and the communications minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Amirzai Sangin.

“I want to thank the ICF for their support and for their recognition of the government’s vision to transform Australia’s economy through the delivery of affordable, high speed broadband,” Senator Conroy said in a statement.

“The NBN will improve efficiency and boost access for Australian businesses; it will deliver better health and aged care services, better online education, and improved access to government services.”

Under the federal government’s high speed NBN project, fibre-optic cable will to rolled out to 93 per cent of Australia’s 13 million homes, schools and business by 2021.

Fixed wireless technology will provide high-speed internet to four per cent of premises and the remaining three per cent will be supplied by two satellites to areas outside the reach of cable and wireless networks.

NBN Co Ltd, the builder of the government’s broadband network, is expected to announce its three-year rollout schedule later this week.
